Vaz Ferreira, living philosopher
The commemoration of the fiftieth anniversary of the death of Carlos Vaz Ferreira allows us to update the enormous and fruitful scope of his work, not yet fully recognized within and outside borders . This update is taking the blunt force of his thoughts and his actions, reflected in many fields: education, social issues, the role of universities, national culture, politics and, of course, philosophy. Vaz Ferreira
erupts in the early twentieth century in a provincial still Montevideo, with a rare maturity able to place and from his early work at the same level of what was being developed philosophically in that time in Europe and in the Anglo world.
One of the important ingredients of the formulation is its integration into the national reality. Thinking in terms of philosophy, was able to permanently place their speculation in the here and now. It is recognized, and his masterly expertise in the use of metaphors drawn, almost all of everyday life. It is therefore a living philosopher, as he wanted it to be the logic. We plan to hold
then Vaz Ferreira's life, not death.
And for this is that call on the Essay Competition, which has, rightly, his name.
AFU's intention is to convene annually to the Contest, promote local development in a continuing philosophical with the times of crisis we live (and what have been times of crisis? Ask our philosopher). It is one of the components of the term "crisis" refers to "opportunity" to create opportunity from what emerges, but this emergency is difficult and labor heartbroken. Moreover, as we stand diametrically opposite of passivity and demoralization is to bet that our fellow citizens who dare to think for themselves.
